The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has released its official immunization guidance for the upcoming respiratory virus season, working in coordination with the West Coast Health Alliance partners Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii. The announcement comes as California implements new measures to protect access to vaccines and maintain health insurance coverage for immunizations across pharmacies, clinics, and other healthcare providers.

State public health officials are emphasizing that immunization remains the most effective way to protect against COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. They note that seasonal vaccination is a critical tool for reducing serious illness, curbing community transmission, and preventing strain on healthcare systems.

Governor Gavin Newsom recently signed Assembly Bill 144 into law. The legislation requires that CDPH’s immunization recommendations are based on evidence from national medical organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP). These recommendations align with those of the West Coast Health Alliance.

An important shared goal among California and its alliance partners is to keep COVID-19, influenza, and RSV vaccines accessible throughout the region.

“Californians deserve clear, science-based recommendations and access to immunizations to protect themselves from vaccine-preventable disease. Changes to state law will maintain insurance coverage and ensure access to vaccines across pharmacies, clinics, and other health care providers,” according to CDPH.
