Property owners who have constructed Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) or Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) without proper permits are being encouraged to legalize these units. According to city officials, doing so can provide several benefits, including making it possible to rent out the unit for periods of 30 days or more, increasing property value, and reducing both safety risks and legal liabilities.

The city emphasizes that professional inspections as part of the legalization process help ensure safe living conditions for occupants. In addition, owners with permitted ADUs may find their properties more appealing to potential buyers.

Further information is available on the city’s Legalize Your Unpermitted ADU guidance webpage.
