The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has scheduled a series of public forums to gather feedback on California American Water Company’s proposal to raise rates for water and wastewater services across its districts in the state. The forums are intended to provide customers with an opportunity to voice their opinions directly to the CPUC before any decision is made regarding the rate increase request.
According to the CPUC, public input plays a significant role in shaping its decisions. “Public input helps the CPUC make an informed decision, and the CPUC invites customers to attend to learn more and provide comment.” Customers can participate either by attending in person at locations within California American Water Company’s service areas or by joining a virtual forum if they are unable to be present physically.
The scheduled in-person forums will take place on January 6, 2026, in Citrus Heights; January 13, 2026, in Sand City; and January 20, 2026, in Camarillo. Each location will host two sessions at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. A virtual session is set for January 28, 2026, also at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., accessible via phone or online viewing.
Customers wishing to comment can sign up to speak during these forums or submit written comments through the proceeding’s Docket Card online portal. The CPUC has also provided contact information for those needing special accommodations such as interpretation services.
California American Water Company is required by regulation to file an application with the CPUC every three years so that water rates reflect current costs associated with providing safe and reliable service. On July 1, 2025, it filed its General Rate Case Application proposing increases that would impact average residential bills: Monterey area bills would rise by about $20.44 (16.1 percent), Southern area bills by $22.56 (17.9 percent), and Sacramento area bills by $16.73 (22.2 percent) per month.
No final decisions regarding this rate request will be made during these public forums.
Further details about the proposed changes can be found on fact sheets available through the CPUC website. Information on how customers can submit comments or sign up for updates is also provided online.
The CPUC oversees utility services across California with a focus on consumer protection and maintaining reliable infrastructure statewide.
