The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has opened the application process for a vacancy on the Diablo Canyon Independent Safety Committee. The position is for a three-year term starting on or after July 1, 2026, and ending June 30, 2029.
The committee is responsible for evaluating the safety of Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. Its duties include reviewing quarterly reports, conducting on-site inspections, and making annual recommendations. These recommendations are first sent to PG&E and then shared with the Governor of California, the California Attorney General, the California Energy Commission (CEC), and the CPUC.
The committee is composed of three members, each appointed by either the Governor of California, the Attorney General, or the Chair of the CEC. The current application period is for a candidate to be nominated for appointment by the Governor.
Eligibility requires applicants to have knowledge and experience in nuclear power plants and nuclear safety issues. Applications must be submitted by February 9, 2026. Once applications are received, information about qualified applicants will be posted on the CPUC website to allow for public comment over a 20-day period.
