The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced more than $320 million in funding to enhance artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities as part of the Genesis Mission. The investments are aligned with President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut and DOE appropriations focused on “AI for science” initiatives. The goal is to develop the integrated American Science and Security Platform, which aims to double the productivity and impact of U.S. science and engineering investments within ten years.
DOE Under Secretary for Science Darío Gil stated, “Thanks to President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut, the Department of Energy is proud to advance AI investments to ensure American technological leadership and accelerate scientific discovery. By investing in the American Science Cloud and the Transformational AI Model Consortium we are creating the foundational technologies and AI-ready data sets that will enable the success of the Genesis Mission.”
The DOE outlined four main initiatives:
– The American Science Cloud (AmSC), which will serve as a central platform for hosting and distributing AI models and scientific data, supporting collaboration among National Labs, industry, and research partners.
– The Transformational AI Models Consortium (ModCon), responsible for developing self-improving AI models using DOE data, facilities, and expertise across various scientific fields.
– Fourteen projects in robotics and automation aimed at transforming laboratory environments with intelligent systems using advanced automation and robotics.
– Thirty-seven foundational AI awards intended to curate large datasets and develop validated AI models for scientific applications.
These efforts are expected to help secure U.S. energy leadership, strengthen national security, and accelerate scientific discovery by enabling new insights from massive datasets and supporting autonomous laboratories.
