President Donald Trump has issued an Executive Order to launch the Genesis Mission, a national initiative led by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aimed at transforming American science and innovation through artificial intelligence (AI). The mission is designed to strengthen the United States’ technological leadership and global competitiveness.

The Genesis Mission seeks to leverage advances in AI and high-performance computing to double the productivity and impact of American science and engineering over the next decade. The initiative’s goals include driving breakthroughs in energy, accelerating scientific discovery, and enhancing national security.

“Throughout history, from the Manhattan Project to the Apollo mission, our nation’s brightest minds and industries have answered the call when their nation needed them,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. “Today, the United States is calling on them once again. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Genesis Mission will unleash the full power of our National Laboratories, supercomputers, and dataresources to ensure that America is the global leader in artificial intelligence and to usher in a new golden era of American discovery.”

This effort builds on previous actions taken by President Trump to advance AI leadership in America. These include an executive order focused on removing barriers for AI development as well as an action plan released earlier this year that aims to foster innovation while reducing reliance on foreign technology sources.

Secretary Wright has appointed Dr. Darío Gil, Under Secretary for Science, as director of the Genesis Mission. The program will mobilize DOE’s 17 National Laboratories along with partners from industry and academia to develop an integrated discovery platform. This platform will connect advanced supercomputers, AI systems, quantum technologies, and scientific instruments across the country into what officials describe as “the world’s most complex and powerful scientific instrument ever built.” It will involve approximately 40,000 DOE scientists, engineers, technical staff members, and private sector collaborators.

The Genesis Mission targets three primary challenges: promoting American energy dominance through advancements in nuclear technology and grid modernization; supporting fundamental scientific discoveries via investments in quantum ecosystems; and strengthening national security with advanced AI tools for defense applications.

Under Secretary for Science Dr. Darío Gil stated: “The Genesis Mission marks a defining moment for the next era of American science. We are linking the nation’s most advanced facilities, data, and computing into one closed-loop system to create a scientific instrument for the ages, an engine for discovery that doubles R&D productivity and solves challenges once thought impossible.”

Brandon Williams, Administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), commented: “The Genesis Mission represents the next great chapter and an unparallelled opportunity for America’s scientific and national security leadership.

“Building on decades of innovation and collaboration across our national laboratories, NNSA will leverage AI, quantum computing, and advanced data analytics that will strengthen our deterrents and ensure the United States maintains an unmatched strategic edge over our adversaries. Under President Trump’s leadership, this mission will embody the very best of American ingenuity, turning science and innovation into security.”

Dr. John Wagner, Chair of the National Laboratory Directors’ Council added: “DOE’s National Laboratories are engines of discovery that keep the United States competitive and secure. The Genesis Mission unlocks the full potential of these institutions by giving our scientists and engineers tools to work at the speed of innovation. Our laboratories have always risen to meet the nation’s greatest challenges, and this initiative ensures we continue that legacy in the age of artificial intelligence.”
