Tom O’Heron, a retired Collective Bargaining Director for the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), has died at the age of 69. O’Heron began his involvement with the IAM in 1978 as a member of Local 21 after training as a machinist and working at the Trane Company in Wisconsin. Over more than four decades, he rose through union leadership, serving as Directing Business Representative for District 66 before joining the IAM International as Collective Bargaining Coordinator and later Director.
During his tenure as Director, O’Heron played an important role in negotiating contracts that secured fair wages, benefits, and protections for IAM members. He retired from the position in 2016 after a career that left what colleagues describe as a lasting legacy within the union.
“Tom O’Heron was a true trade unionist whose work shaped our union and improved the lives of countless working families,” said IAM International President Brian Bryant. “He will be remembered for his steady leadership at the bargaining table, his lifelong dedication to fairness, and his unwavering commitment to solidarity.”
Outside of his professional life, O’Heron was involved in sports coaching and community activities. He coached youth baseball and girls’ high school basketball, enjoyed golf and other sports, and supported his granddaughters’ activities. He was known for being approachable and was active in his church community, serving as Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus.
The IAM extended condolences to O’Heron’s family and friends following news of his passing.
