Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) has highlighted its partnership with the IKUNA program through a new video, “Rooted in Culture: OUSD’s IKUNA Program & Pacific Islander Student Success.” The video provides an inside look at how Pacific Islander students and staff participate in activities that connect them to their heritage.

Students involved in the program share their experiences building a sense of ‘ohana’—the Hawaiian word for family—while learning traditional Samoan and Tongan dances, reading culturally significant literature, and taking educational trips to Hawaiʻi. These activities aim to foster pride in their backgrounds and encourage leadership skills among participants.

The district emphasizes that the success of the IKUNA program relies on collaboration with community members and partners. Their contributions help create learning environments where students feel supported and valued.

The initiative is part of OUSD’s broader commitment to ensuring every student feels recognized and connected to their culture while pursuing academic success.
