The Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) has launched a new orientation program for support staff in its Special Education Department. The initiative aims to better prepare paraeducators and instructional aides as they begin their roles working with students with disabilities.
According to OUSD, the New Support Staff Orientation Week was developed based on feedback from existing staff. The week-long training provides essential skills in crisis intervention and classroom support, helping new employees feel equipped to address the needs of students with disabilities.
“Our district’s primary goals include building a diverse and stable workforce that reflects our community and is ready for long-term success,” an OUSD spokesperson said. “A key part of this initiative is ensuring our newest staff members have the tools and skills to succeed from the moment they join OUSD.”
The orientation also establishes an ongoing support network for participants, which OUSD describes as fundamental to creating supportive learning environments. “This commitment to our staff’s growth and well-being is fundamental to creating the supportive and effective learning environments our students deserve,” the spokesperson added.
The district has produced a video highlighting how these efforts are intended to empower staff and help every student thrive.
