In response to recent community discussion about leadership changes, Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) Superintendent Dr. Denise Saddler has addressed the district’s direction and the priorities guiding its next steps.
Dr. Saddler acknowledged that leadership transitions are common in organizations facing significant change. She stated, “Leadership transitions are not unusual in organizations undergoing significant change, and as Superintendent, it is my job to ensure the District has the right leadership structure, alignment, and urgency to meet the work that lies ahead of us. That work is substantial, and it is time-sensitive.”
She expressed gratitude to outgoing Chief Business Officer Lisa Grant-Dawson for her service, noting Grant-Dawson’s previously announced plans to pursue new professional opportunities. Saddler said, “Transitions, when planned and executed responsibly, allow organizations to reset, recalibrate, and move forward with clarity.” She emphasized that OUSD’s Fiscal Team remains staffed by experienced professionals who have managed challenging budget situations over the years. Additionally, external fiscal experts will be brought in to support technical review and independent validation during this period.
Lynette McElhaney was introduced as the new Chief of Staff. Dr. Saddler described McElhaney as having “deep expertise in project management and a strong track record of leading complex work in partnership with communities.” Her experience as a former Oakland City Council President was highlighted as valuable for coordinating efforts across departments and engaging with school communities.
Dr. Saddler reassured families that educational services continue uninterrupted: “I also want to be clear: the District continues to educate children, support families, and improve outcomes every day, while continuity plans for leadership are firmly in place.” She stressed ongoing commitment to providing quality education through dedicated teachers.
As winter break approaches for students and staff, Dr. Saddler indicated that district leaders will use this time to continue efforts toward financial stability. The main objectives remain stabilizing finances, avoiding state receivership or loss of local control, protecting classrooms from cuts impacting student learning, and maintaining fiscal responsibility.
She stated: “Our objectives are straightforward and non-negotiable:
Stabilize the District’s finances
Avoid receivership and loss of local control
Protect classrooms and student learning
Reaffirm our commitment to fiscal stewardship
This is the work I am here to do.”
Dr. Saddler reflected on her long tenure in public education—over 50 years—and reinforced her belief that focusing on solutions benefits students most: “After more than 50 years in public education… I remain grounded in a simple truth: students do better when adults stay focused, steady, and united around solutions.”
The superintendent promised ongoing responsible budget actions along with continued engagement with families regarding difficult but necessary decisions aimed at ensuring OUSD’s long-term health.
To staff members she said: “I am grateful to all of you for showing up every day with professionalism, resolve, and care for our students… All of it is essential for the District to accomplish its mission.”
To families she offered assurances regarding transparency and fiscal responsibility: “While moments of change can feel unsettling… our focus remains on responsible stewardship… We are approaching this work with urgency, care, and an unwavering commitment to students and families.”
Addressing students directly she added: “You are the reason for every decision we make… We are focused on ensuring your schools are safe, supportive, and centered on your learning and your future.”
Dr. Saddler concluded by reaffirming OUSD’s commitment during this period of transition.
