The Pennsylvania State Council of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) recently held its 2025 conference, where union leaders and delegates discussed current challenges and successes facing their members.
President Rich Howell provided a detailed report on the conference proceedings. IAM Chief of Staff Vinny Addeo addressed attendees about the political environment in Washington, D.C., emphasizing how it affects union members. He stated the importance of defending union rights and resisting efforts to silence workers.
Richie Johnsen, IAM Air Transport Territory General Vice President, reported that mechanics in the air transport sector, especially at American Airlines, are now earning more than $70 an hour—a record level for compensation within this group.
David Sullivan, IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President, spoke to delegates about the organization’s commitment to protecting its members from policies in Washington that threaten worker rights.
During the event, delegates voted overwhelmingly to endorse Janelle Stelson, a pro-labor candidate running for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 10th district. Other speakers covered topics such as legal issues affecting unions, workplace safety standards set by OSHA, strategies used by anti-union campaigns, and local community initiatives.
The conference concluded with a call for increased member participation in upcoming elections for both legislative seats and Supreme Court judgeships in Pennsylvania. Organizers highlighted the importance of supporting candidates who advocate for labor interests.
