Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) has reported a 42 percent reduction in methane emissions from its gas pipeline system in 2024, using 2015 as the baseline year. This achievement surpasses the company’s earlier target of a 20 percent reduction by 2025, which was set by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in 2017.
PG&E voluntarily established a new goal to reduce emissions by 45 percent by 2030 after exceeding the initial mandate. The company submitted its annual emissions data for 2024 to the CPUC in June, detailing the methodology and approach used to reach these results.
“Achieving and surpassing our methane emissions reduction goal is an important milestone that highlights our efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of our natural gas pipeline system. Coupled with our ongoing commitment to support the interconnection and delivery of California-produced renewable natural gas, we remain committed to achieving a net zero emissions energy system for our customers and hometowns,” said Gas Engineering Vice President Austin Hastings.
According to PG&E’s Climate Strategy Report, the company aims for a net zero emissions energy system by 2040 and intends to become “climate positive” by 2050.
PG&E serves more than 16 million people across Northern and Central California. More information can be found at https://www.pge.com/ and https://www.pge.com/news/.
