Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) unveiled the PG&E PowerHouse, an all-electric model home and technology demonstration lab, at its Applied Technology Services facility in San Ramon, California on April 17. The new facility is designed to test and showcase clean energy technologies in a real-life setting.

The initiative aims to make the transition to electric appliances and systems more accessible for customers by reducing costs and simplifying the process. The PowerHouse brings together technologies such as bidirectional electric vehicle charging, smart panels, heat pumps, battery storage, and induction cooking in a single home environment.

Mike Delaney, Vice President of Strategy and Innovation at PG&E, said: “Seeing is believing. The PG&E PowerHouse demonstrates an easy and enjoyable electrified future for our customers. We are tenaciously working every day to eliminate the barriers of cost, time, and complexities so that our customers can make this transition free of hassle and stress.”

The PowerHouse will also serve as a living laboratory where contractors, policymakers, partners, and customers can observe how all-electric homes operate under everyday conditions as well as during power outages. Many of the projects featured at the site are funded through PG&E’s Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC), which supports emerging technology demonstrations aimed at advancing safety, reliability, affordability, environmental sustainability, and equity for California electric customers.

In addition to showcasing current solutions like SPAN Edge technology through PanelBoost—a forthcoming offering that helps add EVs or electric appliances without expensive upgrades—PG&E is collaborating with Itron on ChargeBoost grid-edge intelligence to improve customer experience while supporting grid reliability.

Following its launch event on April 17th in San Ramon, the PG&E PowerHouse will continue operating as a demonstration space hosting tours and community engagement activities focused on promoting practical approaches to electrification.
