A former Neiman Marcus store in downtown Walnut Creek is set to be transformed into a mixed-use space featuring retail, food, art, and design. RH, previously known as Restoration Hardware, has signed a lease for the closed department store building located at Broadway Plaza on South Main Street and Mount Diablo Boulevard.

According to the Mercury News, RH’s planned complex will span two buildings in Broadway Plaza, including 1401 Mount Diablo Boulevard. The new site will resemble the RH dining complex that opened at Stanford Mall in Palo Alto in 2024. Macerich, which owns Broadway Plaza, is leasing the property to RH.

Shelly Dress, general manager of Broadway Plaza, told the Mercury News that the new RH complex is expected to cover 50,000 square feet across two buildings formerly occupied by Neiman Marcus.

Douglas Healey, senior executive vice president for leasing at Macerich, described the upcoming project: “an inspiring integration of food, wine, art and design with an immersive retail experience.” He added that it is “another great example of transformational leasing and the repurposing of a vacant anchor store within our portfolio.” Plans include Mediterranean-style buildings featuring a glass atrium garden restaurant surrounded by fireplaces, fountains and an outdoor wine experience.

The Neiman Marcus location in downtown Walnut Creek closed in 2021 after its parent company filed for bankruptcy in 2020. The building has remained vacant since then. Saks Global later acquired Neiman Marcus but recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy itself. In efforts to manage financial difficulties, Saks Global sold land under Neiman Marcus stores in San Francisco’s Union Square and Beverly Hills earlier this year.
