Snap Inc. has announced the launch of “The Keys: A Guide to Digital Safety,” an interactive online safety program created for teens and their parents. The program, developed in partnership with Common Sense Media and informed by safety experts, aims to educate young people about common risks they may face online, including bullying, illicit drug activity, nude and intimate images, and sextortion.
Members of Snap’s teen Council for Digital Well-Being reviewed the program to ensure its relevance for younger users. According to Snap Inc., the initiative was inspired by drivers education programs that combine classroom learning with practical exercises. In a similar way, The Keys uses realistic scenarios to help teens practice how to respond when confronted with potential online dangers.
Many parents in the United States have expressed concern that existing resources do not provide enough practical guidance for their children on how to navigate digital platforms safely. They have indicated a need for an interactive tool like The Keys.
The 45-minute program is designed so participants can complete it in one sitting or pause and return later. It includes videos, interactive reflections, and scenario-based learning activities. The Keys provides advice on what actions to take when facing difficult situations online and directs users to resources if they encounter threats to their safety or well-being.
The curriculum is divided into two sections: the first covers various risks across different online platforms; the second focuses specifically on Snapchat’s safety features, settings, and reporting tools.
