Snap Inc. announced on Apr. 8 that its Topic Chats feature has seen significant activity during the recent March Madness basketball tournament, with the #marchmadness Topic Chat becoming one of the most active real-time group chats on Snapchat.

The development is notable as it highlights a shift in how fans are engaging with live events online. Instead of posting reactions across various feeds or private messages, users gathered in a single shared space to discuss and celebrate moments from the tournament together.

According to Snap Inc., tens of thousands of fans participated in the chat during key moments such as buzzer-beaters and bracket upsets, reacting live as games unfolded. The company said this behavior demonstrates an appetite for focused, real-time conversation around major cultural events when those spaces are intentionally designed and well-moderated.

The company described Topic Chats as providing a more communal experience than traditional social media posts or comments sections, likening it to watching a game together rather than commenting after the fact.

As interest in real-time group conversations grows, Snap Inc. indicated that these types of digital gatherings may represent a new way for communities to come together around shared passions.
