Snapchat’s AR Studio Paris has collaborated with historian Bettany Hughes OBE and SandStone Global Productions to launch a new television series, “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World with Bettany Hughes.” The program will air on Channel 5 in the UK.

The series documents Hughes as she travels across Greece, Egypt, and Turkey to examine the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Viewers can use Snapchat’s augmented reality technology by scanning an on-screen QR code during the show. This feature allows users to explore digital recreations of ancient sites, such as the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, from their own homes.

According to Snap Inc., “Thanks to Snap’s AR tech, people can bring these extraordinary monuments to life right in the comfort of their homes.”

The first episode will premiere on Channel 5 at 6:30 p.m. BST on August 2 and will be available weekly on My 5. International audiences are directed to https://www.sandstoneglobal.com/seven-wonders-ar for access to the augmented reality experiences related to each wonder.

“Ever dreamt of exploring the Great Pyramid of Giza or strolling through the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Thanks to Snap’s AR tech, people can bring these extraordinary monuments to life right in the comfort of their homes,” a statement from Snap Inc. reads.

“Airing on Channel 5 in the UK, the series follows Bettany Hughes OBE across three continents to investigate the Seven Wonders, traveling to ancient locations across Greece, Egypt, and Turkey to meticulously re-examine the 2,200-year-old ‘bucket list.’ By simply scanning an on-screen QR code with their phones, viewers will be able to virtually travel to moments in time to explore, learn, and see these sites. From traveling to Egypt’s Old Kingdom to check out the Giza Pyramids to seeing the beautiful Hanging Gardens of Babylon — people will be able to explore these awe-inspiring sites in Augmented Reality,” according to Snap Inc.

“The series premiers on Channel 5 at 6.30pm BST on 2nd August and will be streaming weekly on My 5. For viewers outside the UK, they can visit https://www.sandstoneglobal.com/seven-wonders-ar to discover each wonder in AR,” Snap Inc. said.

The partnership aims at providing educational content through immersive technology that brings historical landmarks closer for global audiences.
