Alameda Health System and Stanford Health Care announced on April 9 a new collaboration aimed at expanding access to specialized medical services in the East Bay. The announcement was made during an event at St. Rose Hospital, an affiliate of Alameda Health System located in Hayward, which serves about 400,000 residents in Central and Southern Alameda County.

The partnership is significant for the region as it brings together two established health care organizations to address growing patient needs by expanding innovative care options and improving consistency of care delivery across Alameda County.

Under this arrangement, skilled nursing facility beds at St. Rose will be allocated for Stanford Health Care referrals to increase rehabilitative care capacity. Plans also include developing a community-based inpatient medical psychiatric unit, leasing and developing part of St. Rose’s medical-surgical beds for high-quality units managed by Stanford Health Care, expanding use of operating rooms staffed by Stanford surgeons, and supporting community health initiatives through the AHS/St. Rose Foundation.

James Jackson, Chief Executive Officer of Alameda Health System, said: “In just two short years, AHS has transformed St. Rose into a financially stable hospital that is now operating in the black, demonstrating our deep experience in revitalizing and strengthening community hospitals… This new effort builds on that momentum and reinforces St. Rose as a critical asset for the Hayward community and the broader East Bay.”

Rick Shumway, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Stanford Health Care added: “Alameda Health System has been a cornerstone of care for East Bay communities for decades. Stanford Health Care is proud to stand beside them… Building on a strong history of trusted care, we look forward to serving these communities together for generations to come.”

Mark Fratzke, Chief Operating Officer at Alameda Health System and chair of the St. Rose Hospital Board of Directors said: “By combining our strengths, we are expanding access to high-quality care and creating meaningful impact for the communities we serve… The collaboration reflects what’s possible when mission-driven organizations come together to better serve patients.”

Community leaders also voiced support for the initiative. Assembly Member Liz Ortega said: “I commend Alameda Health System, Stanford Health Care, and St. Rose Hospital on coming together to protect public health in our region… This collaboration moves us closer to long-term financial stability for St. Rose…” David Haubert from the Board of Supervisors called St. Rose “an essential institution” while Supervisor Elisa Márquez praised collaborative efforts between county agencies.

St. Rose Hospital has served local residents nearly six decades as a Joint Commission–accredited safety-net hospital providing more than 800 jobs—including over 300 physicians—and recognized with multiple state and national quality awards.
