Growing up in Sonoma, California, Victoria Hernandez Padilla often felt out of place for her curiosity and outspoken nature. She recalls, “I never felt that I was truly accepted in my hometown.” Living in a working-class neighborhood with her family, whose roots trace back to Jalisco, Mexico, Victoria’s parents worked long hours in service jobs, leaving her and her siblings to support themselves.
Despite these challenges, Victoria found encouragement from her local community. Teachers and counselors recognized her drive to learn and helped her pursue higher education opportunities. She credits this network for supporting her journey: “Looking back, I jokingly call it ‘A community project: getting Vicky into a good school,’” she says.
During high school, Victoria volunteered for a nonprofit focused on helping students access educational resources. Community members assisted with college applications and standardized testing logistics. This support led her to participate in the UC Berkeley Regents’ Overnight Host Program.
Now a second-year student at the University of California Berkeley, Victoria is majoring in political economy and sociology. She is committed to addressing inequalities faced by communities like hers and seeks ways to create meaningful change. As a Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholar—an honor awarded to select undergraduates—she benefits from professional development resources and connects with peers through campus programs. In her role as coordinator of the Regents’ overnight program, she introduces low-income high school students to campus life and academic opportunities.
Victoria describes feeling challenged and supported at Berkeley: “Berkeley not only embraces my curiosity, but it pushes me to be even louder with my questions,” she says. “There’s something beautiful about the campus that allows students to engage with different people from different cultures and backgrounds. Everybody has a story.
“Being at Berkeley makes me believe that I can truly be someone, and grow into the person I want to be.”
