Parents seeking engaging and educational experiences for their children in the Bay Area have a variety of options, according to travel writer Monet Hambrick. During a recent conversation with California Now Podcast host Soterios Johnson, Hambrick shared her top five recommendations for family attractions in and around San Jose.
The Tech Interactive in San Jose is highlighted for its STEM-based, hands-on exhibits suitable for all ages. Known locally as “The Tech,” the center received the National Medal for Museum and Library Service in 2015, which is the highest honor given to museums and cultural institutions in the United States. Families can participate in activities such as designing robots with real sensors, exploring digital art labs, and learning about internet safety through interactive experiences.
Nearby, the Children’s Discovery Museum offers play-based exhibits designed primarily for younger children. Features include a fire truck, an international food market that encourages imaginative play, and specialized areas like the Wonder Cabinet for toddlers and Crawl Space for babies.
Seventy-two miles south of San Jose is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. The aquarium houses more than 35,000 sea creatures across 200 exhibits. It was established with support from the Packard Foundation and has expanded to include research initiatives such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Conservation programs are also a significant part of its mission. Notable attractions include Splash Zone on the second floor, where families can view kelp forests, coral reefs, and penguins.
In San Francisco, Pier 39 remains one of the city’s most popular destinations for families. Visitors can see landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island while enjoying attractions such as Aquarium of the Bay. This venue features local aquatic life including moon jellies, rays, sea lions, and sevengill sharks. The pier also offers behind-the-scenes tours and animal feedings. Dining options at family-friendly seafood restaurants are available alongside entertainment like carousel rides and specialty shopping.
Another prominent institution is the California Academy of Sciences located within Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The academy functions as an aquarium, planetarium, rainforest biodome, research center, and natural history museum under one roof. Families can visit exhibits like Steinhart Aquarium’s Twilight Zone display or Morrison Planetarium’s space presentations. There are opportunities to observe butterflies in Osher Rainforest or learn about biodiversity at Kimball Natural History Museum’s Color of Life exhibit. The academy emphasizes sustainability through green operations and environmental research.
