The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data from the Business Trends and Outlook Survey (BTOS), which tracks business conditions and projections in the United States. The survey includes information from multiunit and multilocation businesses, offering insights into revenues, employees, hours, and inventories.
The BTOS covers all employer businesses in the country except for farms. Data is collected every two weeks, providing ongoing updates on key economic indicators with detailed breakdowns by geography and industry subsector. This approach allows for monitoring the effects of events such as natural disasters or economic crises and helps assess recovery efforts.
Approximately 1.2 million businesses are included in the BTOS sample. These are divided into six panels of about 200,000 each, with each panel reporting every 12 weeks over a year. The Census Bureau estimates that completing the survey takes about nine minutes per respondent.
Survey results will be published biweekly and broken down by sector, state, and the 25 largest metropolitan statistical areas. According to the Census Bureau, these findings supply local, state, and federal officials with essential real-time data to support policy and decision-making processes. Businesses can also use this information to inform their own economic strategies.
There is no formal news release linked to this announcement; it is being distributed as a tip sheet only.
