The U.S. Census Bureau has released new data on state-to-state migration flows and place of birth for 2024. The statistics, derived from the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-year estimates, provide insights into how people moved within the United States and their places of birth.

The State-to-State Migration Flows table details estimates of individuals relocating among all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and those moving to the U.S. from abroad. Additionally, a separate table shows estimates for current residents in these areas based on their place of birth.

Geographic mobility is defined as the movement of people within or across boundaries. According to the Census Bureau, “The State-to-State Migration Flows table package contains: State-to-State Migration Flows. This table provides estimates of the number of people moving between the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico and to the United States from abroad.” The release also notes that “State of Residence by Place of Birth. This table provides estimates of people currently living in the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico by place of birth.”

These new statistics offer updated information about population movement patterns throughout the country for policymakers and researchers.
